The Public Relations Officer of the Futsal Gaborone Indoor Soccer League Thapelo Tumedi hopes companies will soon see the need to sponsor the League because interest in the league has grown.

Tumedi says the league has attracted considerable interest, especially among youngsters and retired players now serving various clubs. He says they would like to see the profile of the league enhanced so that they can eventually attract sponsors and the public to attend the games in large numbers. Tumedi says they are affiliated to the Botswana Football Association (BFA) as the Futsal leagues around the world are part of the broader FIFA Project aimed at promoting indoor soccer leagues alongside the open play leagues.Everyone can register for any team as long as they are not registered with any BFA affiliated team, unless if they play for their corporate teams. “We are not competitors of the open play league, hence this competition,” he adds.  There is need for such a league as people who are not playing in the BFA leagues can play Futsal to keep fit and away from mischief.

On sponsorship, Tumedi says they currently have no sponsors and rely on teams’ subscriptions for the day to day running of the league. He says now that they have put their eggs in a row and all is well, they will aggressively go out to look for sponsors.  “We need incentives for the winners, hence the need for a sponsor,” he says.Tumedi says their major challenge is lack of infrastructure. ‘We only use one venue in a 10- team league so we play until late every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We have tried other organisations like the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and the Botswana Police Service who have facilities to no avail.” He thanked the Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA) for allowing them to use their facilities.  He also called on the media to support the league and help in publicizing it, saying DumaFM has been supporting and publicizing their games. The Futsal League got into full swing two weeks back and games are played at the Botswana College of Agriculture Hall in Sebele every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7pm to 10pm. There were eight teams when the organised Futsal   league started in 2002.Each team in the league can register up to 15 players and most teams have former top flight players like Thato Siska, Zachariah Mudzadzi, Thero Gaadingwe, Jiki Maimela, Robbo Khonzaphi, Seabo Gabanakgosi, Tumie Duicker, Tebogo Sebego, Sekhana Koko, Kabelo Moshaoa, Phazha Butale and the Moruti brothers, Chandy and Ace.
